The church of the Transfiguration of Christ (Metamorfosi).
It was built in 1824 soon after the Greek revolution against the Turks. It’s the Metropolitan church, the cathedral of Hermoupolis.
The history of the church is closely associated with the history of Hermoupolis. During the first years of its existence, the church yard was used as an Assembly Place ehere the people of Hermoupolis would gather to discuss all matters of major importance.
In this yard the first residents who came from Chios and Psara gathered to give the name “Hermoupolis” to the newly-established town in 1826.
Except for the remarkable interior design, what is worth mentioning is the excellent mosaic-work in the yard with its black and white pebbles which form beautiful patterns.
The Church of the Assumption (Koimisi).
It was built in 1828-1829 by Greek refugees from Chios and Psara. It’s a Very beautiful church with important pictures painted by well-known painters from Smyrna. Most of the pictures were dedicated by corporation of tradesmen such as the porters of shipyard, the fishermen, the fishmongers, the butchers, the tanners and others.
It was lately discovered that a fine picture illustrating the Assumption of Virgin Mary was actually painted by the famous Greek artist of the 16th century Dominicos Theotokopoulos (EL GRECO) who lived and worked in Toledo, Spain.
Saint Nicolas Church.
This church is a masterpiece of art and is thought to be one of the most beautiful churches in Greece. Its dome and belfries are really imposing.
The church is dedicated to St Nicolas who is traditionally believed to be the protector of all seamen. Hermoupolis has been the hometown of many seamen since the 19th century until today thus St Nicolas is considered to be the protector of the town as well.
It started being built in 1848 and finished in 1870 although its temble was finished later, in 1883. The imposing size of the church as well as the luxurious interior and exterior reflect the flourishing state and the prosperity of the town in those years.
The Church of the Resurrection of Christ (Anastasi).
It is the “crown” of Hermoupolis. It is built on top of one of the two hills which frame the town. Everyone can see the church standing on top of the hill overlooking the town (even approaching by boat).
It was founded in 1873 but its consecration was in 1909. It has got a very beautiful wooden temble of neoclassical style. The marble pulpit is a copy of the pulpit of St Nicolas Church.
